Sandown Chief Coach, Kevin Blanks, is spearheading a national debate to get rid of long poles in slalom races for younger skiers. Kevin has long argued that encouraging minis and those with under 300 BASS points in GS to hit long poles damages their technique. With the demise of Snowsport GB, Kevin thinks that the time is ripe to encourage all snow and artificial races to gravitate to Giant SlalomControversial stuff Kevin!!Full article in the Spring 2010 SPSRC Newsletter which can be downloaded in the Newsletter Section

Meridien 20th November 2009 - ITV's Paul Belverstone reported: " Sussex has produced some great sporting superstars over the years including Daley Thompson who went to school in Haywards Heath and Gareth Southgate from Crawley. But it is also also home to two superstar skiers. Britain's best female skier, Chemmy Alcott, is from Hove. And, as our Sports Correspondent Paul Belverstone found out, a 15-year old from Chichester is the best in the world in his age group - despite an obvious lack of snow at home! The Tingle Suite at Sandown Park was the venue for the 3rd Sandown Ball on Friday 5th May. The proceeds raised ball will be shared equally between the club and The Chase Hospice 'Christopher's' which is situated at Loseley Park in Guildford Surrey. For those members who did not attend the ball your really did miss a wonderful evening! For those who did - we had a great time! This was the first ball that junior members of the club were eligible to come and in total 15 very glamorous young ladies and equally well dressed young men attended and it was great to have them there. The evening began at 7.30pm in the Sandown view suite which overlooks the slope and Mike More-Molyneux gave a welcome speech on behalf of Chase in which he made clear the need for the continual find raising required to run Christopher's and thanks the club for their continued support to the charityDinner was set to begin at 8.15, but with 190 chatty guests who generously bought many of the remaining wine raffle tickets whilst sipping Champagne delayed both the dinner and our Chairman, John Sharman welcome speech on behalf of the club. If only the ball could have been extended for several more hours, the meal was suburb as were the two speeches made by our two honoured guests, Sarah Lewis, Secretary General FIS a former SPR & British team member and her partner Jorg, who had travelled from Switzerland for the occasion and Oliver Jones and his wife Ann the Chairman of Snowsport GB, who revealed that he learnt to ski at Sandown. The occasion also welcomed many well known skiing names, Chemmy Alcott, hon. SPR member and Olympian, Roger Cruickshank Olympian, Dr Jenny Shute, The British Children Ski Team Co-ordinator and from the 'opposition Shirley Stevens who many of you know from waiting in snowy finish areas! Nigel Smith former SPR and British skier who also made a long distance trip from Scotland could be seen seated with his old adversaries Mr and Mrs Aldridge, John Harris, Sarah and Jorg and of course Kevin who never stopped smiling throughout the evening. It was noted that this table in particular was 'quite noisy!'The main fundraising was an Auction organised by Peter Fiell, which contained some fantastic items. The auction item, a week in a house, in a vineyard in S.A. made the largest amount of money towards the evening and thanks must go to Gail and Richard Gower for donating the itemThe final thanks must go to Rachel Duggan, Sarah Carew and Izabella Evans, who once again said 'they did not do very much' but believe me they did!The evening was a great success and most importantly it raised a great deal of money for the club and for Chase.
